Currently, Vietnam is not a country with a large number of vegans, but its growth rate is faster than the world average. In addition, there are many "misunderstandings" between the Vietnamese concept of veganism and the general vegan standard.
Here are some tips for vegan travelers. to help you better understand the vegan culture as well as the way Vietnamese people use food.
1. Most Vietnamese people are vegan because of Buddhism or tradition, so Vietnamese vegan products still focus on taste rather than its effects on health. They will process products that are similar to daily dishes, so they may contain a lot of oil and additives.
2. Eggs, honey, and dairy products are still used as vegan foods. Some people believe that vegetarians only need not directly use animal meat.
3. Fish sauce - this is a famous Vietnamese condiment, made from fish. Use it as a habit. So when you order a vegan meal, make sure they do not use this product.
4. Due to Buddhist beliefs, some people will think that veganism does not have chives, frozen garlic, pickled leeks, shallots, or garlic. Get used to this!
Here is some information for you when traveling in Vietnam, and to be sure, you should go to places that sell vegan products or prepare a small piece of paper in Vietnamese with the content: Tôi là người ăn thuần chay. Không ăn trứng, sữa, mật ong và nước mắm. Tôi không ăn thịt động vật và bất cứ sản phẩm nào của động vật. Xin cảm ơn.
(I eat vegetarian. Do not eat eggs, milk, honey, or fish sauce. I do not eat animal meat or any animal products. Thank you.)
Hope you enjoy your trip to the beautiful country of Vietnam!
